ABSTRACT

The sources of glycoproteins in nasal secretion were goblet sells and submucosal acini of nasal mucosa. But few studies had tried to quantify them. The purpose of this study is to quantify goblet cells and acini of submucosal glands contained various glycoproteins in the inferior turbinate by using AB(pH 2.5 and 1.0)-PAS staining method in normal subjects. The results were as follows ; 1) The total number of submucosal acini was 72.1±38.3/mm2. The number of acini positive for acidic glycoproteins was 20.9±16.4/mm2 and that positive for neutral glycoproteins was 5.3±5.0/mm2. 2) The total number of goblet cells was 94.6±3.4/mm. The number of goblet cells positive for acidic glycoproteins was 83.2±3.6/mm and that positive for neutral glycoproteins was 11.4±3.0/mm. 3) Most of submucosal acini had neutral glycoproteins(71%) but most of goblet cells had acidic glycoproteins(87.9%), especially sulphomucin(81.8%). From these results, it was suggested that goblet cells and mucous acini might have different function although they were similar morphologically.
