ABSTRACT |
The statistical survey was done on 191 cases with the foreign bodies in the food and air passages, who visited the Dept. of Otolaryngology of S.N.U.H. and removed endoscopically, from Jan. 1960 to Sept. 1965. The results were as follow : 1) The incidence of foreign bodies in order of frequency was coin, bone and meat & food particles in the esophagus. Bean and peanut was the most frequent foreign bodies in the air passage. 2) The 63% of all foreign
body cases were under 5 years of age. The 96% of coin cases were under 5 years of age. 3) The ratio between male and female was 1.5 : 1, more prevalent in male. 4) The ratio between the food passage and air passage was 8 : 1. The 85.6% of food passage foreign bodies was in the first ring of the esophagus and 13.7% was in the second and the 0.5% was in the third ring. The bronchial foreign body was more frequent in the right side as the ratio of 2.5 : 1. 5) Duration of lodgement showed differences in relation with the varieties of the foreign bodies. The 62.0% of bony foreign body was removed out within 24 hours and all cases were removed out within 5 days. Meanwhile, the 48.3% of coins
were removed out within 24 hours. The 62.5% of foreign bodies in the air passage
were removed out within 24 hours. |
