ABSTRACT

Hodgkin's disease affects the lymphoid tissue of any organ, but is rarely seen in the oral cavity. The cause remains unknown, and the essential diagnostic feature is the Read-Sternberg cell. Very few reports exist on clearly defined case of Hodgkin's desease of the tongue. This report concerns a 19 years old boy with deep, irregular ulceration in the midline of the tongue complicated by severe bleeding necessitating tracheotomy and ligation of the external carotid and lingual arteries on both sides. There were no significant change in the peripheral blood, tuberculosis and syphilis were excluded and the biopsy showed the typical features of Hodgkin's disease. Surgical excision was not considered indicated, and the lesion reacted very favorably on Co60 irradiation in a tumor dose of 5,000 γ.
