ABSTRACT

Hemangioma of the sphenoid is considered to be rare tumor, and this report is a recent case found at our clinic. A 11 year old boy entered hospital complaining of progressive nasal obstruction and dyspnea for about 3 years duration. Anterior and posterior rhinoscopies revealed tumor mass in the both nasal cavity and nasopharynx. Soft palate was bulged markedly to the oral cavity. Tumor mass was removed with transpalatal incision under tracheostomy. Tumor mass was originated on the right anterior bony wall of the sphenoid sinus. Posterior portion of the nasal septum, anterior bony wall of the sphenoid, torus tubarius and posterior group of the ethmoid cells etc. were destroyed by compression of the mass. Right external carotid artery was fixed with rubber tube for prevention of the massive bleeding at the time of the tumor extirpation. The length of the removed tumor mass was 10×8 cm and its weight was 44.25 gm. On the 4th postoperative day, the fixed rubber tube for right external carotid artery and anteroposterior nasal packing was removed but there was no noticeable bleeding. Dyspnea and nasal obstruction was disappeared completely.
