Clinical and Statistical Observation of the Atrophic Rhinitis

ABSTRACT

There was no clinical or statistical study about atrophic rhinitis in Korea and it was made on 966 cases of atrophic rhinitis who had visited OPD of Otolaryngology, S.N.U.H. from 1960 until 1968. 1) The incidence of atrophic rhinitis was 2.38% of out patients, but the incidence of typical cases of atrophic rhinitis whose chief complain was related to atrophic rhinitis was only 0.48%. 2) There were 27 cases of ozena, and it accounts for 0.07% of out patients. 3) There was no decrease in incidence of atrophic rhinitis during the past 9 year-period. 4) There was predominance in female in proportion of 1 : 1.5 in case of typical atrophic rhinitis and 1 : 1.7 in cases of ozena. 5) The most common occurrence were in persons between 10 to 29 years of age. 6) There was no sex difference under 30 years of age and predominance in female in proportion of 1 : 2 or 1 : 3 over 30 years of age. 7) The common symptoms of atrophic rhinitis were crust formation, foul odorous discharge, dryness in the nose and pharynx, foreign body sensation in the throat, and hoarseness.
