The Statistic Observation on 209 Cases of Tracheotomy

ABSTRACT

We performed a tracheotomy on 209 cases (for 4 years from April 1966 to March 1970) for the maintenance of air way and other reasons, and obtainted the statistic observation as follows. 1) Most frequent causes for the tracheotomy were acute laryngeal infections in 79 cases(38%), others were laryngeal tumors in 59 cases (24%), traumas in 49 cases (22%), and 25 cases (12%) in others. 2) Most frequent age group is from 1 year to 10 years in 72 cases (34%), and 41-60 years age group in 56 cases (27%) next in order. 3) Sex ratio between male and female 2 : 1, showing 146 cases (70%) in male and 63 cases (30%) in female. 4) There were most prevalent in December and January showing 105 cases(51%). 5) Majority of the patients came to hospital on 3-4th day after onset of disease in 73 cases(35%). 6) Tracheal cannula was removed on the 7-10th postoperative day in 37 cases(25%). 7) Emergency tracheotomy was done in 63 cases(30%). 8) The complication occurred in 22 cases(11%), most common cause of them was difficult decannulation in 7 cases.
