ABSTRACT

In an attempt to elucidate the state of acid mucopolysaccharide in nasal turbinates in the patients with chronic rhinitis, the author investigated histochemically and histopathologically 61 specimens obtained from 17 cases of the patients with chronic rhinitis. The results thus obtained were discussed and summarized as follws : 1) The surface lining epithelium of the nasal turbinate in chronic rhinitis contained granule mixtures of a large amounts of acid mucopolysaccharide, and small amounts of neutral mucopolysaccharide in its cytoplasm. The acid mucopolysaccharide was chiefly composed of a large amounts of sulfate mucin and small amounts of hyaluronic acid. 2) In the stromal connective tissue of the nasal turbinate in chronic rhinitis, there was increase of acid mucopolysaccharide which was made up of large amounts of sulfate mucin and small amounts of hyaluronic acid. 3) In the mucosa of the some nasal turbinate in chronic rhinitis, there was noted in part AP positive red basement membrane that was not thickened. 4) In the stromal connective tissue of the nasal turbinate in chronic rhinitis, there was increase in numbers of secretory glands, which are largely lined by columnar and cuboidal and in part by pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium. The glandular epithelium contained granule mixtures of acid mucopolysaccharide and neutral mucopolysaccharide. 5) The wall of the small vessels of the nasal turbinate in chronic rhinitis were mildly thickened and deposited small amounts of acid mucopolysaccharide that was composed of sulfate mucin and hyaluronic acid. 6) The most endothelial cells of the small vessels and capillaries of the nasal turbinate in chronic rhinitis contained small amounts of acid mucopolysaccharide.
