A Statistical Study of the Foreign Bodies in the Food and Air Passages

ABSTRACT

Clinical observation is made on the total 230 cases of foreign bodies in the air and food passages. The entire foreign body cases that had visited ENT department of Hangang Sungsim hospital from Jan., 1972 to Aug., 1976 are included in this study. 


Results
:1) The most of the foreign bodies are found in the food passages : 222 cases (96.3%). Where as in the air passage : only 8 cases (3.5%). 2) In the cases of food passages, coin is the most frequent material : 194 cases (87.4%). Others are minimal in quantity 1
~6 cases (0.5~2.7%). 3) In the locality of air and food passages, the first narrowing of the esophagus is the most frequent site. 4) Male seems to be more frequently involved than female in both cases of air and food passages. Food passage…131 cases : 91 cases (1.4 : 1), Air passage…6 cases (3 : 1). 5) Most cases of foreign bodies of esophagus were visited within 3 days : 196 cases (87%). In the air passage, 6 cases (75%) were visited within a day and one case visited 1 year late after the accident.
