A Statistical Study of 339 Cases of Malignant Tumor Arising from the Field of Otolaryngology

ABSTRACT

A statistical study of 339 cases of malignant tumor, which were histopathologically confirmed for the past one half and seven years at Department of Otolaryngology, Chonnam National University Hospital were carried out. Following results were obtained. 1) The malignant tumors were composed of carcinoma (285 cases, 84.1%), sarcoma (48 cases, 14.2%) and the others (6 cases, 1.8%). The most frequent tumor was squamous cell carcinoma (250 cases, 73.7%). 2) The most frequently encountered malignant tumor was found in the oral cavity proper (115 cases, 33.9%) and then the larynx (68 cases, 20.1%), the nasal cavity and sinuses (64 cases, 18.9%), the pharynx (56 cases, 16.5%) and the others (19 cases, 5.6%). 3) Sex ratio between male (267 cases) and female (72 cases), as a whole, was almost 3.7 : 1, however, it was about 4.8 : 1 in carcinoma and 1.5 : 1 in sarcoma. 4) Age distribution showed 268 cases (79.1%) in 41~70 year-old group, of which 120 cases (35.4%) in 51~60 year-old group. 5) Most of the patients (247 cases, 72.9%) had visited our clinics within 6 months after the onset of symptoms, of which 117 patients (34.5%) had visited between 1 month and 3 months.
