ABSTRACT

The advent of antibiotic therapy has made the incidence of otitic complications increasingly infrequent, however, a much more serious complication is often found due to the masking of the signs and symptoms of complications by the insufficent chemotherapy and inadequate treatment. The report concerning a mediastinitis or mediastinal abscess by extension of deep neck infection associated with otitic complication is quite rare. The authors experienced a case of fatal otitic complications with a deep abscess of the entire neck, known as Bezold's abscess, and even a mediastinal abscess. This 19 year-old female required a tracheostomy due to edema of the larynx and had also the intracranial complications including suppurative meningitis and perisinal abscess.
