Laryngeal Papilloma Treated with 5-Fu Topical Application

ABSTRACT

Recently the authors experienced 10 cases of laryngeal papilloma(adult 5 cases, children 5 cases) treated with topical spray of 5-Fu solution combined with surgical removal and had good results. 1) Papilloma was found 8 cases in the vocal cord, 1 in the subglottic and 1 in the vocal cord and subglottic region (5 children were in the vocal cord). 2) The duration of 5-Fu spray was from 21 days to 166 days, and its daily dosage was 125mg for adult, 80mg for children. Total dosage was from 2,625mg to 10,250mg. 3) Surgical removal was performed during spray two times in 2 cases, three times in 6 cases and five times in 2 cases. 4) The result of treatment were complete healing in 6 cases and improvement in 4 cases, however 3 cases were recurrent. 5) The side effects of 5-Fu therapy were fever, stomatitis, nausea, vomiting, skin pigmentation and leukopenia, but these complications disappeared after discontinuance of the 5-Fu therapy.
