ABSTRACT

Hoarseness is the main symptom of laryngeal disease and malignancy is suspected especially in the old age group if hoarseness persists over 1 month. Recently we experienced a case of toxic laryngitis suspected as a malignancy in a 68 year old male patient who had symptom of hoarseness for 1 month. He was treated at local E.N.T. clinic, but symptom was not relieved, so transferred to our hospital for laryngeal biopsy suspecting as malignancy. On laryngeal examination the false cord and ventricle were markedly swollen and injected, the true cord was dirty swollen and irregular margin, but mobility was good. On careful history taking he had dealt with insecticides about 1 month ago. Under the impression of laryngeal malignancy we planned to take suspension laryngoscope later and firstly treated with antibiotics and antiinflammatory agents for a few days. After above medication his voice and laryngeal findings were much improved. So we concluded this condition as toxic laryngitis due to insecticides and treated with antibiotics and antiinflammatory agents for 1 week. After then the symptom and laryngeal findings were completely improved. We report this case as a toxic laryngitis suspected as a malignancy with some literature.
