Observation of Abnormal Sensation in the Pharyngolaryngeal Region by the Cornell Medical index

ABSTRACT

From January 1979 to December 1979, the authors studied 89 patients who visited ENT department of Kyungbuk National University Hospital complaining of an abnormal sensation in the pharyngolaryngeal region by the Cornell Medical Index and the Fukamachi's Neurotic Discriminative Chart in accordance to emotional disturbance and clinical observations and then, obtained following results. 1) The mean and standard deviation of complaints by a male are 25.52±10.27 in somatic section and 14.16±6.66 in psychic section, making up 39.68±15.67. Those by a female are 29.17±10.88 and 16.86±6.72, making up 46.03±15.49 in total. Of the numbers of complaints in each section, there is a significant difference between the male control group and the female control group, the male control group and the male patient group, and female control group and the female patient group (p 0.001). But between the male patient group, and the female patient group, there is no significant difference. 2) In evaluating psychological problems, 79 out of 89 cases are presumably picked up as neurosis by the Cornell Medical Index and the Fukamachi's Neurotic Discriminative Chart. Forty two (53.8%) are diagnosed as neurosis and 19 as neurotic tendency by a psychiatrist, making up 61 (78.2%) as neurotic tendency or neurosis. 3) An abnormal sensation in the pharyngolaryngeal region is more common in females than in males by 64 to 25. Those who complained of a foreign body sensation are 36 (40.4%). Most of them have a duration of 1~12 months or 2~5years. Seventy one patients complained of fatigubility along with the abnormal sensations.
