The Clinicostatistical and Histopathological Studies of Nasal Polyps

ABSTRACT

The clinicostatistical and histopathological studies on nasal polyps were carried out on 83 patients who had visited OPD of ENT dept. of Han Gang Sung Sim hospital during the 4 year period from Jan, 1976, until Dec, 1979 and had been performed nasal polypectomies. The results obtained were as follows. 1) The age distribution showed the highest incidence in 20's, then 10's and 40's in its declining order. 2) The sex ratio, male vs female, was 5 : 3. 3) The season of performance of nasal polypectomy showed the highest incidence in the autumn. 4) The majority of nasal polyps was multiple with 92.8% in the type. 5) The most frequent duration of illness was below one year period. 6) The most frequent complaints were nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, headache and hyposmia in its declining order. 7) The most common site of nasal polyps shows middle meatus with hiatus semilunaris & infundibulm. 8) The most common side of nasal polyps was bilateral. 9) Ot the Patients who received nasal polypectomy, 55.4% had chronic paranasal sinusitis and 16.9%, allergic disease. 10) Of the patients who received nasal polypectomy, 12.0% had past history of receiving nasal polypectomy. 11) The histopathologic findings were massive eosinophil infiltrations in 31.3% and the majority of cases were increased in polymorphonuclear leukocytes and the most frequent histopathologic type was mucous polyps with 72.3%.
