ABSTRACT

The prevalence rate of otitis media in Korean population was surveyed from 4,855 subjects. They were from 1,079 families residing in 23 different areas throughout Korea. This survey was done from March through June, 1981. The following results were obtained from this study. Otitis media was detected in 4.6% of the population studied. This would suggest that among the total 38,123,775, population, 1,751,025 people have some type of otitis media. The otitis media is subdivided into acute otitis media, 0.1%; middle ear effusion, 1.51%; and chronic otitis media, 3.48%. There was no sex related difference in prevalence rate of otitis media. Otitis media was found most commonly in 40-55 year old age group. Serous otitis media was observed more often in the age group of under the 15 year old with 2.04%, and chronic otitis media was more frequent over 35 year old group with 6.2%. In chronic otitis media, cholesteatoma type was 12%, active type was 36%, and perforated type was 70%.
