ABSTRACT

The clinical study of complications was done on 72 cases of tracheobronchial foreign bodies, who were treated in department of otolaryngology of SNUH during recent 5 years from 1977 to 1981. The result was as follows ; 1) 80.6% of total cases showed the various complication. The important complications were emphysema, pneumonia, atelectasis in order of frequency. The average complication rate was 1.6 kinds per case. 2) There was no significant relationship between age of patient and complication rate. 3) There was higher complication rate in the plastic or vegetable foreign bodies than metallic or fish-bone foreign bodies. But, there was no significant relationship between the kinds of foreign body and specific complication. 4) Complication rate was increased with increased lag time between inhalation and removal. 5) Ventilating bronchoscopy was done in 91.4% successfully. Complication after ventilating bronchoscopy was seen in 27.9%, and important complications were pneumonia, atelectasis etc. 6) Because of the high complication rate of tracheobronchial foreign bodies, successful handling of the problems posed by foreign bodies is related to the available consultation with pediatrician and anesthesiologist.
