ABSTRACT

The neurilemmoma is a solitary and encapsulated benign tumor of nerve sheath of peripheral nerves. The tumor was first described by Verocay in 1908, and termed neurinoma in 1910. In 1935, Stout termed it neurilemmoma for the origin of the Schwann cell of the neurilemmal sheath. It occurs over a wide age range, but is more common in the third and fourth decades, and is more common in females. About 25% of all reported schwannomas are found in the head and neck region. Acoustic neurilemmoma from schwann cell is frequently seen in the field of Otolaryngology. There are several reports of neurilemmoma arising from the tongue, pharynx and larynx. The parotid gland is the site of development of benign and malignant tumors. Of the benign tumors the most common appear to be the mixed tumors in contrast with other connective neoplasms such as fibromas, neurofibromas and especially, schwannomas which are rare. We have recently experienced a case of neurilemmom arising in the parotid gland of a 64 year old female and discussed with brief current literature review.
