The Clinical and Pathological Study of Laryngeal Mass

ABSTRACT

We studied 108 cases of laryngeal mass, and the following results were obtained. 1) 28 cases of vocal nodule, 46 cases of vocal polyp, 6 cases of laryngeal papilloma 4 cases of laryngeal tuberculosis and 24 cases of laryngeal cancer were confirmed clinically and pathologically. 2) The sex ratio of male to female was 3 : 1 in vocal nodule, 11 : 12 in vocal polyp, 1 : 1 in larygeal papilloma, 3 : 1 in laryngeal tuberculosis, 5:1 in laryngeal cancer. 3) The prevalent age distribution was fourth and fifth decade in vocal nodule, fourth and fifth decade in vocal polyp, first decade in larygeal papilloma, third and seventh decade in laryngeal tuberculosis, sixth and seventh decade in laryngeal cancer. 4) The Duration of symptom was within 1 year in vocal nodule, vocal polyp and laryngeal papilloma ; 1-several years in laryngeal tuberculosis and laryngeal cancer. 5) The most frequent symptom was hoarseness. 6) The location of mass is between the anterior 1/3 and middle 1/3 of the vocal cord in vocal nodule, polyp and papilloma, middle 1/3 and posterior 1/3 in laryngeal tuberculosis and glottic (50%), supraglottic (42%), infraglottic (8%) in laryngeal cancer. 7) Vocal nodule and papilloma were bilateral in location, Vocal polyp have a location ratio right to left of 2 : 3 respectively. 8) Vocal nodule and papilloma were generally 1-2mm, Vocal polyp 3-5mm and laryngeal tuberculosis and cancer generally meas sured greater than 10mm. 9) All laryngeal cancer was squamous cell carcinoma.
