A Clinical Study of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome

ABSTRACT

The Ramsay Hunt syndrome designates the occurrence of herpes zoster at the cephalic extemity, particularly at the auricle, usually associated with neural signs of the facial or of the facial and acoustic nerve and which is rarely experienced in the otolaryngologic field. A clinical observation was performed on 25 cases with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, who visited to the Department of Otolaryngology, College of Medicine, Kyung Hee University during past 10 years from July 1973 to June 1983, accordingly to medical records. The obtained results were as follows ; 1) It occurred more often in female showing 14 cases(56%) and was seen after fourth decade mostly. 2) It was most frequently found in December, and July and October are next in order. 3) Left side was more frequenty affected than right side. 4) The duration from onset to visit was 8.7 days in average. 5) The otalgia was most frequent initial symptom and headache, facial pain and nausea/vomiting were next in order. 6) Although herpes and otalgia appeared in all cases, facial palsy did not appear in only one case. 7) Of all types of the clinical pictures, type II of Hunt classification was seen the most frequently showing 10 cases(40%). 8) In topographic diagnosis, the most common site of lesion of facial nerve was suprastapedial region showing 10 cases(71.5%) among 14 cases. 9) Of 14 cases with facial palsy which was followed up for 1 year, most of them was recovered within 6 months, but in 2 cases, there was no evidence of recovery of facial palsy.
