Bacteriological Study in Chronic Maxillary Sinusitis

ABSTRACT

The bacteriological findings in 100 sinuses with chronic maxillary sinustitis and study for sensitive drugs are reported. There are many articles reported about the bacteriology of maxillary sinusitis, but due to various techniques empoyed to obtain a representative specimen of maxillary sinusitis, characterized by a diversity of results. In this study, specimens were obtained by nasal swab, antral puncture and Caldwell-Luc operation. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common organism found in nasal swab, but specimens taken by means of antral puncture & Caldwell-Luc operation, Hemophilus influenzae is the most common one. The percentage of sensitive strains were higher against Cefotaxime, Amikacin, Carbenicillin, Gentamicin, Ampicillin, Cephalothin, Tobramycin, Kanamycin, and Chloramphenicol. The percentage of resistant strains were higher against Methicillin, Penicillin, and Tetracycline.
