ABSTRACT

A great number of persons are getting involved in many fields of work. Numerous industrial hazards including noise-induced hearing loss have developed in the last few years. Previously, the noise pollution went unnoticed in the early days of the economic developments. In order to develop a more effective and specific method of prevention of hearing loss resulting from noise, we studied the effectiveness of various hearing protection method by comparing a group who were using hearing protection method(Dry cotton, Wet cotton, Ear plug) with a group who were unmasked and exposed to 98 dB pure tone. The results are as follows, 1) In most cases, the groups who were using the hearing protection method showed TTS within 2 hours. Irrespective of ear protection method. 2) In unmasked group, persons who were exposed for 90 and 120 minutes, did not show TTS within 2 hours. Also, in pure tone groups, except for 30 minutes, TTS was not noticed even after 2 hours. 3) In wet cotton group, hearing levels were returned to normal range within 60 minutes. In ear plug group, hearing levels were returned to normal range within 70 minutes. And in dry cotton group, result was within 90 minutes. The results indicated recovery time was better in the order of the wet cotton, ear plug and dry cotton. 4) The degree of hearing losses were noticed between 0 and 11 dB. In unmasked group, the average amount of hearing loss was 11 dB, in dry cotton, 5.7 dB was noticed and in wet cotton, 3 dB was noticed. In ear plug group, 4.2 dB was observed. The comparison in recovery time, showed wet cotton, ear plug, dry cotton, in this order, average amount of hearing loss was minimal. 5) In graph which were compared average amount of hearing loses to progression of time. Wet cotton group showed minimal hearing losses as compared to other groups, in 30 and 120 minutes groups, the degree of hearing loss was more severe in dry cotton group than ear plug group. But in 60 and 90 minutes group, no remarkable changes were noted.
