ABSTRACT

The Cornell medical index is a self-administered instrument that collects a large body of significant medical and psychiatric data. The questions on the C.M.I. are arranged in sections headed by letters of the alphabet, questions in each section being related. The study was designed to develp a quick and reliable method of obtaining important neurotic components in ear, nose and throat patients. Thirty nine cases of ear operation, forty nine cases of nose operation and twelve cases of throat operation were analyzed on their mental complaints from February to April 1985 with C.M.I. The results were as follows : 1) In the cases of ear operation, number of mental complaints by section in male was topped by section M(inadequacy), followed by section Q(anger), while that in female was topped by section M, followed by section R(tension). 2) In the cases of nose operation, number of mental complaints by section in male was topped by section M, followed by section Q. 3) In the cases of throat operation, number of mental complaints by section in male was topped by section M, followed by section Q, while that in female was topped by section M, followed by section R.
