ABSTRACT |
Since Eyermann had reported nasal eosinophilia in nasal smear of allergic rhinitis patients in 1972, nasal smear for eosinophils has been used as useful laboratory test to diagnose nasal allergy. Using the definition of Mullarkey, we studied 44 patients, 23 patients of ENR and 21 patients of VMR, to confirm the clinical charateristics of ENR comparing with VMR from March 1985 to February 1986. The objectives of this study were as follows : 1) to evaluate eosinophilic count of nasal secretion, 2) to evaluate the relation of eosinophilia between nasal secretion and blood, 3) to evaluate the change of nasal eosinophilia after steroid treatment in ENR patients, 4) to evaluate the response of medical treatment by symptom scales. The results were as follows : 1) The mean value of nasal eosinophil count in ENR patients was 62.6%, and the eosinophilia in nasal secretion did not relate to blood. 2) The eosinophil count of secretion in ENR patients decreased markedly from 62.6% to 3.4% after steroid treatment. 3) The change of symptom scales in ENR patients related closely to the change of eosinophil count in nasal secretion. 4) The response of medical treatment in ENR patients were significantly better than VMR patients.
