ABSTRACT

It is inadequate to use conventional speech discrimination tests for younger children because of several reasons : (1) the children's probable under-development of language ; (2) the unfamiliarity of the test words ; and (3) their age, oral or written responses are not feasible. The authors attempted to construct the word lists and the plates of picture for the Word Intelligibility by Picture Identification test(WIPI) that the child simply pointed to one of several pictures upon hearing the associated word, instead of repeating or writing the word. We selected three monosyllabic word lists and one disyllabic word list consisting of 20 words in each list for the stimulus words, and plates of picture for the pictorial representation of the words. The results of the study in children with normal hearing and normal language development indicated that the mean discrimination score of WIPI test was greater than that of conventional speech discrimination test.
