ABSTRACT

Serum total IgE value is a significant factor in diagnostic procedure of the patients with suspected allergic disease in association with nasal symptoms, eosinophilia in the nasal secretion, eosinophil count of the peripheral blood. The author determined the serum total IgE value by ELISA(enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) method in 112 patients with allergic rhinitis and 62 healthy subjects as control group. The results obtained were as follows : 1) Mean serum total IgE value of 112 patients with allergic rhinitis was 567.93±325.21Iu/ml. This value was significant difference of serum total IgE value compare with 62 healthy subjects whose mean serum total IgE value was 103.69±74.52Iu/ml(p<0.05). But there was no significant difference between sex and groups. 2) Groups between positive and negative reaction in scratch skin test in patients with allergic rhinitis, there was significant difference of serum total IgE value(p<0.05), but it was not useful in clinical application. 3) In the view point of eosinophil counts in the nasal secretion in the patients with allergic rhinitis, there was significant difference of serum total IgE value between the group of positive and negative eosinophils in the nasal secretion(p<0.001). 4) Degree of clinical symptoms based on sneezing, watery rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction in the patients with allergic rhinitis, the more discomfort patient suffered, the higher value of serum total IgE was found. There was significant difference of serum total IgE value between the groups of and + nasal symptoms(p<0.001). 5) Serum total IgE value had no significant correlation with eosinophil count of peripheral blood.
