ABSTRACT |
Although there are many foreign bodies in the esophagus with esophageal injury, only small number of disc battery foreign body have been reported in the medical literature. As the use of small, flat disc batteries for energy sources(watches, cameras, hearing aids, calculators etc.) increases, the possibility of the esophageal injury with swallowed battery will increase in children. We studied the experimental esophageal injury with disc battery in the rabbits. These batteries are capable of rapid tissue ulceration and necrosis on the esophagus especially with charged one, but there was no changes in control group. It is recommended that retained batteries in the esophagus should be promptly removed.
