A Statistical Survey of Foreign Body in the Food and Air Passages

ABSTRACT

The statistical study was done in 72 cases in food and air passages during 7 years from march 1980 to February 1987 in Department of Otolaryngology of Seoul Red Cross Hospital. The results are as follows ; 1) The incidence of foreign bodies in order of frequency was coin(43.1%), meat & food particles(29.2%), metals(15.5%), in the food passage. Bean and peanuts were the most common in the air passage. 2) There was no difference in frequence in both sexes. 3) The 41% of all foreign bodies was under 5 years old, and a significant numbers were found in group over 51 years old. 4) The most common foreign body, coin was found under 10 years old, mainly 5 years old. 5) The 80.0% of food passage foreign bodies was in the first ring of esophagus and 9.2% was in the second ring and 5.1% was in the third ring. The ratio of bronchial foreign bodies in right and left side was 4 : 1 more common in right side. 6) The 80.6% of all foreign bodies was removed out within 1 day.
