ABSTRACT

The schwannoma is known to be originated from the schwann sheath of the nerve fibers. It is well-encapsulated, may prepicipiate symptoms by pressing the nerve fiber, and rarely recurs after removal. We studied retrospectively 19 patients who had been diagnosed as schwannoma pathologically after the operation in the E.N.T. department of the Severance Hospital from July, 1972 to September, 1986. The results were as follows ; 1) There was no predominance between sexes, and the most occurrences were in the 2nd or 5th decade. 2) The usual chief complaint was palpable mass(13 cases), which was followed by respiratory difficulty(2 cases), throat discomfort(2 cases), and so on. 3) The size of tumor was variable from 1×1.5 cm to 5×8×15 cm. 4) The predilection site was parapharyngeal space(5 cases) and tongue(5 cases). 5) The identified nerves of origin were cervical sympathetic chain(2 cases), vagus nerve(1 cases), cervical nerve(1 case), and cervical plexus(1 case). 6) Mostly performed surgical procedure was an excision(17 cases).
