ABSTRACT |
Retropharyngeal abscess was frequently seen in the preantibiotic era. Antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents have decreased the incidence of this serious disease. The use of antibiotics has altered the typical symptoms and sings, and these alterations made the diagnosis more difficult. Symptoms and signs in children differ form that in adults. The child may display fever, irritability, and poor feeding. In adults, the patient may present with fever, sore throat, nasal obstruction, neck tenderness, dysphagia, odynophagia, and dyspnea. A careful history and physical examination is essential for diagnosis. The lateral radiogram of the neck is valuable. Broad spectrum antibiotic therapy and surgical drainage are included for proper management. The authors have experienced three cases of retropharyngeal abscess. We report these cases with review of literatures.
