ABSTRACT

The mucocilary thransport activity in the nose contributes to the defence mechanism of the respiratory tract. The clearance of particles from the nasal mucosa can easily be examined by saccharin time priorly described. We studied nasal mucociliary clearance by means of saccharin method in pathologic conditions of human nose ; septal deviation, chronic sinusitis, hyperreactive nasal disease and post-op. state of tracheotomy. The results were compared with clearance time of normal control group. We also studied in patients who had undergone submucosal resection of nasal septum or intranasal surgery for chronic sinusitis about the mucociliary transport time before and after surgery. The results were as follows, 1) The mucociliary transport time of the various couditions are ; (1) Normal control : 16.91±7.14 min(N=75). (2) Septal deviation : 28.31±18.03 min(N=42). (3) Chronic sinusitis : 42.68±32.86 min(N=47). (4) Hyperreactive nasal disease : 20.61±11.61 min(N=23). (5) Tracheotomy : 55.27±26.08 min(N=15). 2) Nasal mucociliary transport time returned to normal about 1 month after submucosal resection of nasal septum and about 3 months after intranasal surgery for chronic sinusitis. 3) The saccharin method is easy to administer and is a stable method in evaluations of patient prior and subsequent to nasal surgery.
