Clinical Investigation and Evaluation of Flexible Fiberoptic Nasopharyngolaryngoscopy in Otolaryngologic Field

ABSTRACT

Flexible fiberoptic nasopharyngolaryngoscopy has been recently used for the otolaryngologist and it was known that easy, safe, accurate and reliable methed for examining the upper aerodigestive tract. Also, it afford good photographic records. The study was performed on 103 patients who were underwent fiberoptic nasopharyngolaryngoscopy during the period from March 1987 till March 1988 in Otolaryngologic Department of National Medical Center. 1) Total number of patients was 103(male 77, female 26). The ratio of male to female was 3 : 1. The most common age group was 6th decade(30.1%). 2) The areas of chief interest were as follows ; larynx and hypopharynx 60.6%, nasopharynx 13.3%, nasal cavity 10.4%, trachea 10.4% and soft palate 5.9%. 3) The chief complaints were hoarseness 58.0% in larynx and hypopharynx, neck mass 61.5% in nasal cavity, nasopharynx and soft palate, dyspnea 83.3% in trachea. 4) The patient was differentiated to total 33 disease entities. The common diseases were as follows ; laryngitis 19.4%, laryngeal cancer 13.6% and vocal cord paralysis 7.8%. 5) Biopsy sites were larynx and hypopharynx 54.3% nasopharynx 19.8% nasal cavity 14.8%, soft palate 9.9% and trachea 1.2%. 6) The total number of biopsies was 81 cases. False negative was 2 cases and insufficient sample was 3 cases. The sensitivity was 93.8%.
