ABSTRACT

Fungus culture was carried out in 65 patients of chronic suppurative otitis media, combined with ordinary bacteria culture. Fungi were isolated in 23 of 65 cases(35.4%) of chronic suppurative otitis media. The fungus isolation was especially associated with persistent or recurrent otorrhea. Majority of isolated fungi were species of Aspergillus and Candida. The use of otic solution was positively associated sith fungus isolation, especially Candida species. Therefore, we must consider fungal infection as secondary pathogen in patients of chronic otitis media with persistent or recurrent otorrhea and the topical use of antifungal agents will be helpful to treat these cases.
