ABSTRACT

This study was attempted to reveal the effect of the facial nerve denervation on glycogen content and glycogen synthetic activity of orbicularis oris muscle in rats. In the control group, the glycogen lever of the orbicularis oris was 1.50±0.483mg/100mg wet weight, which was lower than those of the other skeletal muscles. At 3rd day after denervation, glycogen content of the orbicularis oris was slightly decreased but was not statistically significant. At 7th day after surgery, the muscle glycogen content was decreased significantly to 0.89±0.157, and it was not decreased any more at 21th day after denervation. To evaluate the glycogen synthetic activity in the denervated orbicularis oris muscle after 7th day on surgery, the radioactivities of the extracted glycogen from the denervated muscles after oral ingestion of 14C-glucose were measured. The results were as follows; the radioactivity was 664.8±149.72 cpm/gm wet weight in the control group, but 314.8±80.68 in the denervated group. The radioactivities in the different muscle fiber types in rat hindlimb such as soleus(slow twitch ret), red gastrocnemius(fast twitch red), plantaris(fast twitch mixed), and white gastrocnemius(fast twitch white), were 1022.6±256.07 cpm/gm wet weight, 958.8±248.71, 664.8±149.72, 608.3±120.50, respectively. The glycogen synthetic activity of orbicularis oris muscle was similar to that of plantaris(fast twitch mixed) muscle.
