Electron Microscopic Observation of the Human Palatine Tonsils

ABSTRACT

Unlike the other gut-associated lymphoid tissues(GALT), palatine tonsils are covered by stratified squamous epithelium. The crypts of human palatine were examined under scanning electron microscope. Three types of micropores were observed. Type I micropores took the form of widened gaps between more than 3 epithelial cells, and contained free cells within it. Type Ⅱ micropores were opening near the center of epithelial cell surface in the form of micropit, which had no free cells within it. Type Ⅲ micropores were plugged by specialized epithelial cells with numerous microvilli on its surface, which were separated from neighboring ordinary epithelial cells only by a shallow groove. Micropore may contribute to the function of antigen receptor through the stratified squamous epithelium of human palatine tonsil as a GALT.
