The Incidence of Otitis Media with Effusion

ABSTRACT

We analyzed clinical incidence in 492 patients(800ears) with otitis media with effusion(OME) from May, 1983 to April, 1988 in the retrospective study. The result showed the overall incidence of 2.0% of OME 24,495 first OPD patients and 4.6% among admission patients. Peak age was between 2 to 12 years old, 61.4% was attacked in spring and winter and bilateral effusion showed in 62.8%. Clinical etiologies were rhinosinusitis(43.8%), adenoid vegetation(26.6%), and URI(21.5%) in the order. The recurrence rate by clinical etiology revealed rhinosinusitis(75%), allergy(7.5%), cleft palate(7.5%) in the order.
