ABSTRACT

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is known as the most common maligant neoplasm of salivary gland. It has peculiar course, depending on histopathologicl feature. We analyzed the data from December 1983 to June 1995 of 30 patients : 17 patients were males, 13 patients were females and mean age was 48.5 years old. The origins of tumor consisted of parotid gland 43.3%(13/30), submandibular gland 16.7%(5/30), sublingual gland 6.7%(2/30) and minor salivary gland 33.3%(10/30). Painless mass(65%) was most common chief complaints. As the histopathologic grade 30 cases were divided into low 7, moderate 8, high 15 cases. Lymph node metastasis was more common in case of above T2, and moderate or high grade in major salivary glands. The recurrences after treatment were found on 6 cases(22.2%) : 3 cases in parotid gland & each 1 case in submandibular gland, sublingual gland, maxillary antrum. 2 cases in grade II & 4 in grade III. Primary tumor origin sites were the most common recurrent site(5 cases), followed by lung(3 cases). Tumor recurrence was ominous sign to survival. In only 1 of 6 cases(16.7%) recurrent tumor was controlled.

Keywords: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma.
