ABSTRACT

Warthin's tumor has been thought to occur much more common in men than in women and rarely in Asians. Seventeen cases of Warthin's tumor treated at the department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck surgery, Korea University College of Medicine from 1985 through 1995 were retrospectively reviewed. There were 12(70%) men and 5(30%) women with an overall men-to-women ratio of 2.4 : 1. The average age was 52.4 years(range from 29 to 70). Sixteen tumors were found in the parotid gland, one occurred within the submandibular gland. One of 16 patients, had bilateral tumors of parotid gland. Frozen section and Tc99m scan seem to be one of the most effective tools for preoperative or intraoperative diagnosis. A superficial parotidectomy was performed on 13 patients(Bilateral parotidectomy was underwent on one patient). One patient had a total parotidectomy for involvement of deep lobe. Two patient had enucleation only. One patient had submandibular gland resection. Surgical complications were one of temporary facial palsy and one of Frey syndrome. None of them revealed recurrence after operation.
