ABSTRACT

The 2f1-f2 distortion-product otoacuostic emissions(DPOAE) are evoked by two primary tones of frequencies f12, and levels L1 and L2. In the present study, DPOAE at the 2f1-f2 frequency were recorded form 21 normal ears with L1=L2, and with L12, at each of three values of L1(65, 75, 80dB SPL). Detailed testing included the recording of DPOAE-amplitude frequency functions in 100Hz steps from 1000 to 7200Hz. On average, DPOAE amplitude increased as the stimulus level increased, but DPOAE-growth functions saturated at high stimulus levels(above 75dB SPL). The average DPOAE-amplitude frequncy functions illustrating the frequency response of these emissions demonstrated a bimodal contour. The influence of decreasing L2 below L1=L2 substantially reduced mean DPOAE amplitude at L1≥75dB SPL, but increased mean DPOAE amplitude at L1=65dB SPL. It is concluded that optimal stimulation levels on clinical applications of DPOAE are systematically dependent on L1.
