ABSTRACT

Acoustic rhinometry is a new, objective method to assess the geometry of the nasal cavity. The cross-sectional area and nasal volume of the nasal cavity as the function of distance from nosepiece was obtained to evaluate the charateristics of the obstructed nose and mucosal hypertrophy. 25 patients with septal deviation and turbinate hypertrophy underwent septoplasty and Laser-assisted turbinoplasty. The five parameters such as cross-sectional area of the isthmus notch(I-notch), conchal notch(C-notch), the area of 4cm from nostril(CA4.0), the area of 6.4cm from nostril(CA6.0) and the volume of nasal cavity were measured preoperatively and postoperatively. The results were as follows : 1) The cross-sectional area at C-notch, CA4.0 and total volume increased significantly on narrow side. 2) The cross-sectional area at CA4.0 increased significantly on wide side. 3) The cross-sectional area at C-notch, CA4.0 and total volume increased significantly on summation of both sides. 4) The symptomatically improved group showed larger C-notch, CA4,0 and nasal volume than the non-improved group. But there was no statistical significance. 5) There was no significant difference between allergic & non-allergic patients. In conclusion, acoustic rhinometry can be useful in evaluating the results of nasal surgery.
