ABSTRACT

p53 tumor suppressor gene has come to the forefront cancer research, because it is frequently mutated in human cancers and TGF-α is known as a mediator of cancer cell invasion and metastasis. But there are still controversy in their clinical meanings in head and neck cancer, especially in laryngeal squmous cell carcinoma. In the present study, the author examined the correlations of p53 and TGF-α expression according to primary tumor sites, primary tumor stages, nodal stages, distant metastasis, clinical stages and pathologic grades to investigate the clinical significance. p53 and transforming growth factor-α(TGF-α) expression rate and clinical patterns were evaluated by immunohistochemical staining in 32 cases of laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas. The results were obtained as follows : 1) p53 was expressed 31.3%(supraglottis-33.3%, glottis-27.3%) and TGF-α reactivity was expressed 93.8%(supraglottis-95.2%,, glottis 91%) in laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas. 2) There was no significant statistical correlation between p53 and TGF-α expression and clinicopathologic parameters such as primary sites of tumor, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, tumor staging and histopathologic grade. In conclusion, the expression of p53 protein and TGF-α may be related with development of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, but not correlated with prognostic indication of laryngeal cancer.

Keywords: TGF-αp53Squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx.
