Otogenic Brain Abscesses

ABSTRACT

Author analyzed 28 cases of otogenic brain abscess which and had been reported during 1958 to 1967 in Korea, including 3 cases which experienced in our hospital and 2 cases in Woo suk med. hospital. Of these 28 cases, 16 cases were temporal lobe and 12 cases cerebellar abscess. In 21 cases (75%) out of 28 cases, brain abscess associated cholesteatoma were observed. 12 cases (44.4%) of all these cases revealed gram negative bacilli and 7 cases gram positive cocci. As regards initial symptoms and signs, headache and vomiting were present in 85.7%, neck-stiffness in 68.7%, and papilledema in 30%. The mortality rate in the present series was 57%.
