ABSTRACT

The presence of the intracranial gas in the film of the skull or brain CT scanning is called pneumatocele or pneumocephalus. Trauma is the most common cause of the intracranial gas but intracranial gas secondary to infection by gas forming organisms is very rare. The intracranial infection may follow paranasal and middle ear sepsis, penetrating injuries, or surgery. It is clinically important to distinguish between gas containing brain abscess due to infection and intracranial air by trauma. Gas containing brain abscess evolves rapidly and the clinical course of the unattended patient is invariably fatal due to the increase of intracranial pressure. However, the adequate and prompt surgical drainage of the purulent material and gas from abscess cavity decreases mortality rate. The authors experienced two cases of gas containing temporal lobe abscess secondary to chronic suppurative otitis media with cholesteatmoa and in this paper, we are reporting two cases of successfully treated brain abscess with literature survey.
