Foreign Bodies in the Food and Air Passage : A Review of 160 Cases

ABSTRACT

A review was carried out on 160 cases of the foreign body in the food and air passage, who visited the Department of Otolaryngology of Masan Koryo General Hospital from May 1981 to July 1987. The following results were obtained ; 1) Among the 160 cases, 142 cases were the foreign bodies of the food passage and 18 cases were the air passage. The ratio between the food and air passage was about 7.8 : 1. 2) The frequently encountered foreign bodies in the esophagus were coin, bone and food particles in order. Bean and peanut were the most frequent foreign bodies in the air passage. 3) In the age distribution, 95 cases were male and 65 cases were female, and the ratio between male and female was 1.5 : 1. 4) In the age distribution, 101 cases(63.1%) of all foreign bodies were under 5 years of age. 5) In the location of the foreign bodies of the food passage. 136 cases(95.8%) were in the first esophageal narrowing. In the air passage, the frequent sites were the bronchus, trachea and larynx in order. Among the bronchial foreign bodies, 11 cases were in the right bronchus and 4 cases were in the left bronchus. 6) In duration of lodgement, 83.1% of foreign bodies in the food passage and 61.1% of foreign bodies in the air passage were removed within 24 hours. 7) Almost all of the foreign bodies in the food and air passage were removed by endoscopic procedures under general anesthesia.
