ABSTRACT

150 cases of biopsy, which were taken from the various structures in the field of otolaryngology and which were confirmed pathologically, during the past 2 years in our department, were analysed. The distribution of lesions according to the pathological classification are as follows :

The incidence in sex, male has 2.7 times of female in malignant tumors, particularly 5:1 in squamous cell carcinoma. In benign tumors, male has 1.4 times of female. In the age distribution, there are 46 cases(78%) between the ages from 41 to 70 in malignant tumors. But 26 cases(72%) between the ages from 21 to 51 in benign tumors. The distribution of lesions according to organs involved are as follows :

Nose Max. Sin. Mouth. Phar. Lary. Eso. Neck
Squamous cell Ca. 8 2 14    2 5 6 0
Adenocarcinoma 0 0 0 0 0 1 1
Basal cell Ca. 2 0 0 0 0 0 0
Unclassified Ca. 3 0 0 0 0 0 0
Malignant Lymph. 0 0 0 0 0 0 2
Reticulum cell Sa. 3 0 4 1 0 0 1
Fibrosarcoma 1 1 0 0 1 0 0
Angiofibrosarcoma 1 0 0 0 0 0 0
Tuberculosis 1 0 1 2 12    0 5
Chronic inflammation 5 0 13     2 7 4 1
Rhinoscleroma 2 0 0 0 0 0 0
Polyp 9 0 1 0 7 0 0
Papilloma 0 0 3 0 5 0 0
Angiofibroma 0 1 0 3 0 0 0
Cyst 0 0 2 0 0 0 0
Hemangioma 1 0 0 0 0 0 0
Ranula 0 0 1 0 0 0 0
Myoepithelioma 0 0 1 0 0 0 0
Mixed tumor 0 0 1 0 0 0 0

Although there were many cases of polyp in the nose and many cases of polyp, papilloma and Singer's nodule in larynx, very few biopsies were done for pathological diagnosis. Now I would like to emphasize to have pathological confirmance of any kind of suspected chronic lesions so that we can diagnose the malignancy as early as possible and save the human life by the proper early treatment.
