Clinical Survey of Tuberculosis of the Larynx |

ABSTRACT |
In the past, tuberculosis of the larynx combined with lung tuberculosis was common disease, but it has become a quite rare disease since antituberculosis chemotherapy. The authors are reporting thirty-six cases in the past 10 years period from 1966 to 1975 in which tuberculosis of the larynx was diagnosed upon indirect laryngoscopy & chest roentgenographic findings. The results were as follows ; 1) In age distribution, the highest incidence was in the group of
40~49(12 cases, 33.3%) & followed by group of
30~30(10 cases, 27.7%). 2) The ratio of male to female is 5 : 1. 3) The most common symptoms are hoarseness(31 cases, 86.0%), pain in the throat & odynophagia. 4) The duration of symptom was ranged from 2 days to 5 years, with an average of 11.6 months. 5) In 25 patients(69.4%), the chest roentgenogram showed active, far-advanced with cavitary lesion. 6) The laryngeal lesion were commonly erythematous swelling on the interarytenoid & vocal cord. 7) The result of direct smear & culture were both positive in 11 cases, both negative in 8 cases tuberculosis of the larynx was not experienced.
