| ABSTRACT |
|
Complications of paranasal sinusitis has been progressively decreasing since the advent of antibiotics. The orbital cellulitis and subperiosteal abscess formation most commonly arise from spread of contiguous infections of the lids, teeth or paranasal sinuses and if untreated, followed by orbital abscess. And the other causes of orbital infections include trauma and tumor. The most frequently isolated pathogen in orbital infection included staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus pyogeneus. Complications of orbital infections include corneal ulcer, optic neuritis, thrombosis of central retinal vein, extradural abscess, subdural abscess, purulent meningitis. Recently, the authors have a good experience to manage a case of orbital abscess surgically that was suspected to be caused by chronic sinusitis and present this case with review of literature relating to orbital abscess.
