Clinical Study of the Traumatic Peroration of Tympanic Membrane

ABSTRACT

The authors carried out a clinical analysis for 89 cases of the traumatic perforation of tympanic membrane who visited to the emergency room and Department of Otolaryngology, Soonchunhyang University Hospital during the period from January, 1986 to May, 1990. The following results were obtained ; 1) The incidence was predominated of male than female and the ratio of male to female was about 2 : 1. The peak age of incidence was 20's, 41 cases(46.1%). 2) The majority of the cases were due to indirect trauma, 79 cases(88.8%). 3) Traumatic peroration was most common on the left side, 53 cases(59.6%). 4) The location of perforation was usually seen at the antero-inferior quadrant, 52 cases(58.4%) and postero-inferior quadrant, 21 cases(23.6%). 5) The size of perforation was variable, 31 cases(34.8%) of half-rice size, 21 cases(23.6%) of pin-head size and 19 cases(21.3%) of rice size. 6) The shape of perforation was also variable, irregular round, 28 cases(32.5%), triangular shape, 26 cases(29.2%) and round shape, 21 cases(23.6%). 7) Common symptoms were hearing loss, 45 cases(50.6%) and otagia, 28 cases(31.5%). 8) Degree of average hearing loss was 25.3dB, and the degree of hearing loss was closely related to the size of perforation. 9) Majority of the cases, 70 cases(78.7%), visited within 3 days after injury. 10) The overall healing rate at two months after the trauma was 80%(24 of 30 patients).
