ABSTRACT

Facial nerve paralysis is not common disease in otolaryngologic field but the facial nerve is more often paralysed than any motor nerve, perhaps because it has a longer course in a bony canal. The disorder may become cosmetically and functionally disabling. The authors analyzed 57 cases of facial nerve paralysis at Department of Otolaryngology, Chunan Hospital, College of Medicine, Soonchunhyang University from April 1985 to March 1990. The results were as follows ; 1) The most common age group was 3rd decade 13 cases(22.9%) and sex distribution was more in male 41 cases(71.9%) than female 16 cases(28.1%). 2) The incidence between right and left side was not different. 3) The causes were traumatic 28 cases(49.1%), idiopathic 16 cases(28.1%) and infectious 9 cases(15.8%) in order. 4) The result of nerve excitability test of 26 cases revealed degeneration 10 cases(38.5%) an non-degeneration 16 cases(61.5%). 5) In result of topognostic test of 33 cases, the common lesion was between geniculate ganglion and chorda tympani nerve 24 cases. 6) 40 cases(70.2%) were treated with medical therapy(24 cases) and surgical therapy(16 cases). 7) In result of follow-up, 3 cases(37.5%) of degeneration(8 cases) and 4 cases(33.4%) of nondegeneration(12 cases), 5 cases(33.4%) of surgical therapy(15 cases) and 8 cases(36.4%) of medical therapy(22 cases) were completely recovered.
