A clinical study of the neck masses.

ABSTRACT

A clinical review of 212 cases of the neck mass which had been confirmed by the histopathologic examination was done retrospectively during recent 5 years. The results were as followings : 1) The benign masses (congenital, inflammatory and benign mass) were 131 cases (61.8%) and malignant masses (primary, unknown primary and metastatic tumors) were 81 cases (38.2%). 2) The most frequent benign mass was inflammatory (55.0%) and malignant mass was metastatic (62.9%). 3) In the sex distribution of tumor, there were 64 male cases (49.0%) and 67 female cases (51.0%) for benign tumor and there were 64 male cases (74.0%) and 17 female cases (26.0%) for malignant tumor. 4) Of the metastatic neck masses, the most common primary site was larynx (47.0%). 5) In the treatment of neck masses, surgical intervention was performed in the 48.9% of benign masses and combined therapy was applied in the 56.7% of maliganant tumors.
